Oversized & Overweight Curbside Trash Cans Must Go: Town
All curbside trash containers must be smaller than 45 gallons in size, have handles and weigh less than 50 pounds when full.

BRANFORD, CT —The town's solid waste and recycling department has been letting it slide for a while, but warning letters will start showing up.
In a message to the community, a letter reads that "many" folks across Branford are using "over-sized/overweight" garbage cans at curbside for weekly collections. Called "large toters," the cans cannot be hoisted to dump in the garbage trucks as those trucks are not equipped to for that maneuver so the cans are dumped by workers by hand. According to the town, a policy was adopted in February 2020 that said the over-size cans may not be used, especially "for the safety of all of the workers."
Beginning Tuesday, crews will be placing a warning ticket on any over-size and/or overweight containers — those cans that are 55-gallon in size —noting the trash will not be collected. The ask is that folks replace those cans with 32 gallon containers for next weeks' pickup.

"As a courtesy they have continued to collect from all households," the letter reads. But no longer.
