BRANFORD, CT — Saying abandoned trolley tracks, utility cuts, age, and local drainage issues have led to the increasing deterioration of Main Street, the town is moving forward with a "full-depth" reconstruction of Main Street.

The construction, slated to begin next spring, will be from South Main Street to just past Chestnut Street within the existing roadway width, curb-to-curb, with sidewalks not part of the project but "enhanced accessibility and other improvements to the sidewalks and crosswalks will be updated where necessary."

In a community message, the town noted it's been working with the Regional Water Authority and Southern CT Gas Company to replace existing infrastructure prior to the roadway reconstruction, a measure needed for utility cuts in the future and to "ensure the longevity of the town’s efforts to
rehabilitate the roadway."

Preliminary design for the reconstruction is in the beginning stages and final design drafts are
expected by years-end. It's noted that there's a number of opportunities for residents, business owners, and those interested to review draft designs and provide additional feedback in the upcoming months.

And, periodically the town’s website will be updated with latest ways to get involved.

For now, the town hopes folks will consider taking an online survey to "assist in guiding the initial
design phases, share your thoughts and to sign up for email updates." The survey will be open until July 9.

There will also be an "open house" July 22 on the Town Green from 4:30-6:30 p.m., which will coincide with the Town Green live music series, which starts at 6 p.m. "A perfect opportunity for a family outing," the message reads.

The design and reconstruction has been approved by the South Central Regional Council of
Governments for Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program funding.
