4 Family Members — 2 Children — Struck By Car In Fairfield

The fifth family member, a 5-year-old, was pushed to safety, according to Fairfield police.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A driver from Danbury struck members of a West Haven family on Thursday in Fairfield, according to police.

Authorities received several 911 calls just after 1 p.m. about a group of pedestrians being hit by a vehicle at Black Rock Turnpike and Stillson Road, police said.

Five people were trying to cross Black Rock Turnpike when four of them — two women, a 12-year-old and a 4-year-old — were struck while in the crosswalk by a car turning left onto the turnpike from Stillson Road, according to police. The fifth person, a 5-year-old, was pushed to safety by one of the women, police said.

The driver, a woman, stopped and remain at the scene in the aftermath of the crash, according to police. The four people who were hit were taken to Bridgeport Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Officers determined a GPS unit on the left side of the driver’s windshield had blocked her view of the pedestrians, and that the pedestrians had not used the button and light at the crosswalk, according to police.

“The Fairfield Police Department reminds operators to ensure their windshields are clear from any obstructions to prevent incidents like this from happening,” Lt. Antonio Granata said in an email. “Pedestrians are also remind to be obey pedestrians crossing signals at intersections.”
