FAIRFIELD, CT — Five Fairfield residents were displaced Saturday by an overnight fire.

Emergency personnel received a call about 12:45 a.m. that a three-story rental building in the 100 block of Churchill Street was ablaze, according to Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood.

The tenants were home at the time of the fire but were able to escape uninjured after their neighbors alerted them to the blaze.

“We were very fortunate the neighbors discovered the fire,” Sherwood said.

The blaze started in the rear porch area, spreading to all three floors of the building and leaving the home uninhabitable. The landlord paid for the tenants to stay in a hotel and the Red Cross was called in to assist, according to Sherwood.

It took firefighters 90 minutes to control the blaze, and they remained at the home for four hours. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The Bridgeport Fire Department assisted on scene and the Westport Fire Department provided station coverage during the response, according to a Facebook post from the Fairfield Fire Department.
