'This Is A Big Deal': Hundreds Attend Outdoor Prom At Ludlowe
Students gathered outdoors for dancing, lawn games and socializing after a school year shaped by the coronavirus pandemic.
FAIRFIELD, CT — After a year earmarked by limitations and some disappointments due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fairfield Ludlowe High School's graduating class of 2021 got a chance to enjoy an in-person prom party Friday night.
“It’s amazing,” said Cindy Stetter, co-class adviser and health teacher. “I’m so excited for the kids. They haven’t had anything for a while and this is a big deal.”
Around 325 people gathered for dancing, lawn games, and a lot of socializing under and around an enormous tent set up in front of the school.

“It feels good,” said Matt Lewis, 17. “I’m glad that we could make it work.”
There were initially worries about the rainy weather — and consideration even given to canceling the event — but by the time the party started around 7:30 p.m. the sun was shining bright and spirits were high.

“This is totally great,” said student Nina Massucci, who came by stretch limousine with several friends. “Especially being fully vaccinated and to be able to wear no mask and be with all my classmates. It’s great.”
Ryan Kelly, co-class adviser and biology teacher, noted that this class of kids had to miss out on a range of traditional activities, including the homecoming dance.
“They’ve given up so much their senior year, so I’m glad we could put this on,” he said. “I know the kids are excited, and the parents are happy.”
Reed Childers, 16, and Jack Morison, 17, were the first couple to arrive and pass through a pair of blue and white balloon pillars marking the entrance.
“It’s still a little weird,” Jack said regarding attendance at an in-person event. “But I’m just happy we’re having something.”
