Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire Sunday in Fairfield.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire Sunday in Fairfield.
The fire department was notified about the blaze by an alarm that went off roughly 1:30 p.m., causing emergency personnel to respond to an apartment in the 1000 block of Knapps Highway, according to Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood.
Firefighters put out the blaze quickly, and the fire caused only minor damage, although it also generated extensive smoke, according to Sherwood, who said the blaze was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette. No one was injured and the apartment remained habitable, Sherwood said.
