FAIRFIELD, CT — A recent uptick in groups of people recklessly driving dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles on Fairfield roads has become a source of public alarm, according to police.

Law enforcement urged residents to report reckless driving, while also noting that statewide policy indicates officer pursuit of such vehicles could be dangerous.

“Many times attempting to stop these motorized vehicles (causes) further reckless behavior and further reckless operation,” the Fairfield Police Department said in a Facebook post. “Understanding that these vehicles will likely flee if an officer attempts a stop, when these acts occur we do monitor the individuals from a distance to ensure the public is safe.”

Police try to identify the involved drivers, but barriers to identification include a lack of license plates, and the presence of helmets or face coverings, according to the post.

“We thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to ensure public safety while operating within the confines of both policy and (statutes),” the post said.
