Fairfield CARES Community Coalition Marks Mental Health Month

Fairfield, CT, May 7, 2021 – Have you noticed the green lights on the Tree of Hope at Sherman Green in Fairfield Center? Green is the color for May’s Mental Health Awareness Month. The Fairfield CARES Community Coalition that focuses on youth and young adult substance use prevention as well as mental health promotion, is the featured Fairfield organization for the Tree of Hope and encourages everyone to be mindful of their emotional health.

Fairfield CARES is conducting several events throughout the month to promote healthy ways of managing stress or anxiety. The Fairfield CARES Youth Committee: Generation of Change is hosting a Wellness Fair at Sherman Green on Wednesday, May 12th from 3:00-5:00PM for upper elementary and middle school students and their parents; May 19th from 7:00-8:30PM, the coalition will host psychologist and comedian, Matt Bellace, Ph.D. author of Better High: Laugh, Help, Run, Love and Other Ways to Get Naturally High, who will get you laughing and will discuss his book that actually teaches and encourages young people to get high — in safe, positive and natural ways. On Wednesday, May 26th from 4:00-5:00PM, join us in a Laughing Yoga Class taught by Shelli Sullivan. Bring a beach towel or a yoga mat and meet us on the beach at Penfield Pavilion.

National Prevention Week is from May 9-15. Fairfield CARES is joining the nation and the state in observing this annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental health and/or substance use disorders.
