FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield firefighters assisted during the early morning hours Wednesday in a search for two New York men who went missing after taking a canoe out on the Long Island Sound.

The fishermen, Roberto Guevarra and Roberto Murillo, were found dead about 6 a.m. in Smithtown Bay off the coast of Long Island, according to ABC7, which reported the men had launched a canoe about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from Makamah Beach.

A marine unit from the Fairfield Fire Department worked with the Coast Guard by looking for the men about 3:30 a.m. off the coast of Fairfield, according to a Facebook post from the agency. Firefighters also walked the beach at first light to continue the search.
