Fairfield Grocery Store Evacuated Due To Smoke
Fairfield firefighters were on the scene Thursday night at ShopRite.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield grocery store was evacuated Thursday night due to concerns about a smoke smell in the building.
Not long before the business was set to close at 10 p.m., management at ShopRite, 1975 Black Rock Turnpike, safely cleared the store and contacted the fire department about the odor, according to Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir. Firefighters believed smoke at the scene was caused by a rooftop heating unit, he said.
There was no fire nor was there enough smoke to set off the alarm at the store, according to Kalapir, who added the business was expected to open 6 a.m. Friday for normal hours.
