Fairfield Man Apprehended After Trying To Flee From Police

The incident began when Fairfield police saw the suspect driving a vehicle without a visible rear license plate.

FAIRFIELD, CT ? A 39-year-old Fairfield man was arrested on a warrant by Fairfield police this week, after authorities said that he fled from an officer who tried to pull him over for a motor vehicle violation, Patch has learned.

Daniel Burby was driving a white Hyundai Elantra on Black Rock Turnpike on Feb. 22, but the vehicle did not have visible rear license plate.

"The plate had been bent upward, obstructing the lettering from view," Fairfield Police Sgt. Jenna Wellington told Patch. "The officer initiated a traffic stop, and while the driver initially stopped, he fled as the officer approached the vehicle. However, the officer was able to see the operator before he left the scene."

According to Wellington, on the next day, the same officer was investigating a reported larceny at a CVS Pharmacy on Black Rock Turnpike, and the description of the suspect matched Burby.

"Officers located the same white Hyundai Elantra nearby, with Burby behind the wheel," Wellington said. "Although CVS declined to pursue shoplifting charges, Burby was warned not to return to the store."

The encounter with police in the alleged CVS incident was enough for officers to positively identify Burby from the traffic stop on the 22nd, and obtain a warrant for his arrest.

Burby was arrested on Wednesday, and was charged with the following:

  • Interfering with an officer
  • Engaging police in pursuit
  • Failure to display marker plate

He was released after posting a $1,000 non-surety bond, and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on March 24.

"This case highlights the diligence and teamwork of our officers in holding individuals accountable and ensuring public safety," Wellington told Patch.
