Fairfield Man Rescued After Jumping Off New Haven Bridge

First responders rescued the Fairfield man after he crashed a stolen car then jumped off a bridge in New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Emergency responders rescued a Fairfield man who jumped off a bridge into the Quinnipiac River on Saturday, according to state police.

Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 34, of Campfield Drive, crashed a car he was driving around 10 a.m., police said.

When first responders arrived, Sulaiman ran from the car — which police said was stolen — and jumped off the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge into the river. First responders then rescued Sulaiman and transported him to Yale New Haven Hospital, according to a state police statement.

Police said Sulaiman crashed the car intentionally, and law enforcement found a small amount of drugs among his property.

After he was released from the hospital, Sulaiman was charged with second-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, assault of an emergency responder, possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than a half-ounce of cannabis, interfering with an arrest, evading responsibility, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

He was held on $50,000 bail and was set to appear Monday at Superior Court in New Haven.
