Fairfield Postal Worker Stole Cash From Mail, Gets Probation

FAIRFIELD, CT — A former Fairfield post office worker was sentenced to home confinement after stealing cash from envelopes while on the job, according to authorities.

Jessica Giles, 38, of West Haven, was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation, the first three months of which she must spend in home confinement, plus a $2,400 fine, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney of the District of Connecticut.

Giles was employed as a post office supervisor in Fairfield between October 2019 and May 2020, the news release said. During that time, she used the flashlight on her phone to look inside envelopes in the mail, and opened envelopes she believed contained cash, stealing the money, and, on multiple occasions, tearing up and disposing of the envelopes, according to the news release.

Surveillance video showed that Giles stuffed 19 envelopes into her pants, the news release said. She pleaded guilty Nov. 3 to theft of mail by a postal employee, according to the news release.
