Fairfield Warde Student Wins National Merit Scholarship

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield Warde High School student was named Wednesday as a National Merit Scholarship winner.

Christopher R. Newell, who plans to study finance, received a scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville.

National Merit Scholarship Corp. this week announced over 3,100 scholarship winners financed by U.S. colleges and universities, according to a news release. Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among the finalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Wednesday’s news marks the third National Merit Scholar announcement in 2021 by National Merit Scholarship Corp., which named recipients of corporate-sponsored awards April 21 and winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships on May 12. Additional recipients of college-sponsored awards will be announced July 12. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,500 students will have won National Merit Scholarships worth about $30 million.
