Fairfield's Intrigue Hair Salon Makes Clients' Well-being the Priority

Carolyn Pease truly cares for her clients and her staff.

The Intrigue Hair Salon owner and her stylists are committed to preserving the well-being of their customers and themselves -- a notion made more important after
one of their stylists died of breast cancer in 2012. Casey Chernes Paules was just 29.

"What we're breathing in, ingesting -- clients and staff are like family and I don't want to endanger them if I know better," Pease said.

Some customers recently began complaining of itching, scabby skin following coloring treatments. One client was hospitalized for a severe allergic reaction after a treatment she received on vacation and was told that if she colored her hair again, she could die, Pease said.

Pease knew she had to act to provide a service for those who have developed allergies to chemical hair dye ingredients, like PPD.

"I'm a true believer that if you put something out there, it will come back to you," Pease said.

She began her research and was quickly rewarded when a product representative came into the salon with a brand-new line: Maraes (pictured).

Instead of ammonia, sulfate, PPD, paraben, and gluten to push the color into the hair cuticle, Maraes dye depends on organic oil.

"We've been using it for about month -- the results and technology are amazing," Pease said.

The color provides what most clients are looking for in the chemical-based dyes -- 100 percent gray coverage.

"It's nice to have an option, something that's natural," Pease said of her customers allergic to chemical dyes.

"Knowing people have reactions, we always better ourselves and our products," Pease said.

She said the salon is trying to raise awareness about how severe these allergies can be and to let people know that if you have an issue with dye, "you don't have to worry anymore."

"We want to have solutions," Pease said. "This is a solution."
