FAIRFIELD, CT — Firefighters extinguished a blaze Tuesday at an assisted living and memory care facility in Fairfield.

The fire department responded about 9 p.m. to Sturges Ridge of Fairfield in the 400 block of Mill Plain Road, according to Deputy Chief Kyran Dunn. Facility staff reported smoke in the lobby, and the building’s sprinkler system activated upon firefighters’ arrival. Emergency personnel found the smoke was coming from a nearby day room.

Firefighters put out the blaze and used mechanical ventilation to clear the smoke, according to Dunn, who said the fire originated from an icemaker that was under a counter in the day room’s kitchenette and couldn’t be reached by sprinklers.
