Man Posed As Elderly Woman's Nephew, Stole $7K: Fairfield Police

The woman wired money to a bank account, but later called police after realizing she was likely scammed, Fairfield law enforcement said.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A New Jersey man is accused of posing as an elderly Fairfield woman’s nephew in order to steal $7,000, according to police.

Walter DeAlmeida, 28, of Newark, turned himself in to Fairfield police April 1 upon learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree larceny, law enforcement said.

Detectives connected DeAlmeida to an incident that occurred Nov. 28, 2020, when the woman told police someone had called claiming to be her nephew and told her he had been in a drunk driving accident, was being held on $90,000 bond in New Jersey and needed money to get out of jail, according to law enforcement. The woman wired $7,000 to a bank account, but later called police after realizing she was likely scammed, law enforcement said.

DeAlmeida was released on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, according to police.
