Helen Wargo, age 99, was born on May 27, 1921, and passed away unexpectedly at home on May 16, 2021, 12 days short of her 100th birthday.

Mom married our dad, Joseph Wargo, who passed away in 1991. They were married after Dad returned from WWII. Together they had two sons, Joseph (wife Nancy) of Ellington, and Stephen (wife Eileen) of Stamford. Mom was 80 years old before becoming a grandmother to her three cherished grandchildren, Kelly, Sarah and Joe Wargo of Stamford. Besides her sons and grandchildren, Mom is survived by her sisters, Theresa, of Tappan, New York, and Margaret, of Bridgeport, as well as many nieces, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her bothers, Zolton, Michael and John, and a sister, Olga.

Mom sold war bonds while waiting for Dad to return from the war. After raising us she worked as a bookkeeper for numerous companies. She attended St. Ann's Church in Black Rock for 75 or more years and volunteered at Black Rock School. Mom was an avid gardener who loved all things green. We all marveled at how she could make even the saddest looking stick grow into a beautiful plant. She loved to cook and bake and made sure everyone who entered her home was very well fed. Mom also enjoyed reading and was always up to date on current events happening in the world. And if there was a tag sale in the area, Mom was there!

On challenging days, Mom would say, "One day at a time." She might have been petite in stature but she had a giant spirit. Her greatest joy was her devotion and care of her family. Family and friends traditionally gathered at Mom and Dad’s house for holidays and family events. Good times were had and remembered by all.
