Obituary: Jeremiah 'Jerry' Anthony Sarno Jr., 87, Of Southport
Sarno was on the 1949 Fairfield Prep miracle season football team, served in the military at an atomic testing site and worked as a jockey.

Jeremiah “Jerry” Anthony Sarno Jr., 87, lifetime resident of Southport, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2021, with his sister, Valerie, by his side. Jerry was born on Sept. 18, 1933, in Southport to the late Lillian Rita (Vigilante) and Jeremiah Anthony Sarno Sr.
Jerry attended Fairfield Prep and was a member of the 1949 miracle season football team. He then served in the U.S. Armed Forces at the atomic testing site in Nevada. Jerry was a well-noted equine professional and worked as a jockey and a trainer in the horse community. His greatest love was being around his family, friends and his dog, Jersey.

Jerry leaves behind his sister, Valerie Ann Bray of Uncasville; his brothers, Joseph Ronald of Buffalo, Wyoming, and George Eugene of Milton, Georgia. He will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, Austin Cody Sarno, Eric Alan Bray, Melissa Ann Blais and Alison Lee White, as well as many great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his niece, Tracy Sarno.
Visitation was held May 3 at the Shaughnessey-Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 4 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield. Burial followed in St. Thomas Cemetery.
