Opinion: Democracy or Hypocrisy? | Part II

Democrat Elizabeth Zezima (D-4) has insisted across social media that a special election is an inefficient waste, an about-face from 2017.

2017: Elizabeth Zezima (RTM, D-4) defended a special election. 2025: Zezima calls a special election a waste. What changed? Not the Charter, just the politics.

The following opinion essay is by the Fairfield Republican Town Committee:

Fairfield, CT, August 28, 2025 - In 2017, RTM member Elizabeth Zezima (D-4) was crystal clear about what she believed gave legitimacy to government decisions: an election. Writing in the Fairfield Patch on June 4, 2017, she made the following remarks:

?Electing Kevin Kiley to the Board of Selectmen in the special election on June 6th is the right thing to do for Fairfield? Republicans, who refuse to recognize the legitimacy of this election and feel entitled to power without input from voters? It is one-party rule lacking in both transparency and decency.?

Her words couldn?t have been stronger: only an election could provide legitimacy.

But this week, Ms. Zezima has taken the opposite position. Instead of defending Fairfield voters? right to a special election to fill the First Selectman vacancy, she has loudly insisted across social media that a special election is an inefficient waste and inferred that we must accept the appointment of a new leader by political insiders, without a single ballot cast by the open public.

What changed? In 2017, she condemned those who ?refuse to recognize the legitimacy? of an election. Today, she dismisses the very idea of holding one.

Fairfield residents see through this double standard. The people of Fairfield deserve the right to vote on their First Selectman. Anything less is hypocrisy.
