Opinion: Fairfield Leaders Attack Those Who Help the Most
Charlton & Gerber: Embarrassing

The following news release is from the Fairfield Republican Town Committee:
FAIRFIELD, CT ? First, Democrat First Selectman Bill Gerber attacked our teachers?now he?s silent as Democrat Lori Charlton targets social workers and the vulnerable residents they serve.
At the recent Health & Human Services budget hearing, Democrat Board of Finance Chairman Lori Charlton?s behavior was unprofessional, insensitive, and out of line. As Charlton prepares to wrap up budget season and jet off to her Florida home, she lectured a respected social services expert and pushed to eliminate essential emergency aid for struggling Fairfield residents?turning a blind eye to the real needs of our community.

Even after the Director of Human Services clearly explained a long-standing and vetted gift card program?s necessity for those qualifying individuals in need and the critical oversight provided by licensed social workers, Charlton doubled down on her personal agenda. She demanded the program be outsourced to nonprofits?adding layers of bureaucracy and making it harder for people in crisis to access the help they need.
And First Selectman Gerber? He sat in the public meeting and did not utter a single word. Silent. Indifferent.

Fairfield deserves leaders who care?leaders who listen to experts and prioritize the well-being of our residents. An apology is the least Charlton and Gerber owe the Director of Human Services and the people of Fairfield.
We encourage members of the public to show their support for Fairfield social workers by contributing gift cards to the town?s Social Services Gift Card Program. These cards directly benefit those in need. Let First Selectman Gerber and BOF Chairman Charlton know?don?t cancel this vetted and vital program.
