Racist Incident At Fairfield Meeting Under Investigation: Police

Thursday's meeting of the Racial Equity and Justice Task Force was interrupted by racist comments from an unidentified person, police said.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield police are conducting a hate crime investigation after a meeting of the town’s Racial Equity and Justice Task Force was interrupted by racist comments from an unidentified person, according to a department news release.

The public meeting, held via videoconference, was interrupted about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, when the person screen-shared images of slaves and said racial epithets and racist remarks, according to police, who noted that some of the comments were directed at Black task force members.

The incident was reported to police, who launched the investigation. Fairfield law enforcement said in the news release they will consult state and federal agencies for assistance if necessary.

“This is something that we take extremely seriously and will investigate to the fullest extent,” Chief Robert Kalamaras said in the news release. “There is no place for this type of racist behavior and language in our community and we will do everything we can to identify the person who committed this disgusting act and hold them responsible.
