FAIRFIELD, CT — Several residents were temporarily displaced by an overnight rooftop fire at a Fairfield apartment complex.

Emergency personnel received a report just before 10 p.m. Wednesday about a blaze on the deck at the Alto Fairfield Metro apartments in the 1400 block of Kings Highway, according to a fire department news release. Firefighters arrived within minutes and found smoke coming from the roof and people evacuating after a resident pulled an alarm.

Crews found toxic smoke on the sixth-floor deck and discovered the fire was hidden inside a decorative section of a fireplace, requiring first responders to use power saws and hand tools to get to the blaze and extinguish the flames, the news release said.
