FAIRFIELD, CT — Drivers on Interstate 95 were surprised Thursday afternoon by a runaway tire that escaped a tractor-trailer at a Fairfield rest stop.

Fairfield firefighters responded after the trailer lost its dual rear tire at the northbound rest area, where the tire came close to striking parked cars and fuel pumps, bounced through the rest stop and hit the pump canopy before continuing into oncoming traffic, the fire department said in a Facebook post.

No one was hurt. The trailer was carrying corrosive acid, but the substance was not affected.
