Wakeman Boys & Girls Club seeks 9th-12th grade boys and girls of all interests, personalities, experiences and abilities to serve as mentors through the Wakeman Mentoring Program at McKinley and Holland Hill Elementary Schools. Mentors volunteer 2 hours weekly, with the current year's program ending in late May. The program has a priority need for teen boys now. Program volunteers currently come from 10 different high schools.

The program matches more than 125 teens in 1 on 1 partnerships with 2nd-5th graders, where they focus on homework, reading, board games, life skills and outdoor play in a group setting. The Holland Hill Program meets Tuesdays 2:45-4:45, and McKinley Program meets Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays 2:45-4:45. All mentoring time is supervised by Wakeman staff and its Adult Chaperone Team.

Through after-school mentoring, kids gain a consistent role model and strengthened academic skills while teens develop patience, compassion and knowledge while exploring careers working with youth, fulfilling high school community service requirements or just giving back to others.

The programs are a partnership between the schools, Superintendent’s office and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, with the Holland Hill program supported by the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield and McKinley program supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. Interested teens can contact Outreach Coordinator Coreen Ahmad at 203-908-3381 x 207 or outreach@wakemanclub.org. All potential volunteers are interviewed and oriented prior to a placement decisions. The spring program ends in late May, with mentors eligible to re-join in September 2019
