Thousands Attend As Fireworks Return To Fairfield: PHOTOS

FAIRFIELD, CT — Despite a postponement due to weather Saturday, the Parks and Recreation Department’s Independence Day fireworks celebration came back with a big bang Monday night.

Thousands flocked to Jennings Beach throughout the afternoon to settle into a good spot, break out some food and drink, and enjoy a mid-summer social event.

“We’re looking forward to the fireworks tonight,” said Anthony Calabrese, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “And happy the weather is cooperating.”

He said that in a typical year, the department would expect around 7,000 to 10,000 visitors on the beach for the event.

“I think it’s going to likely be a lighter crowd than usual,” Calabrese said, in part because of the show having been moved to a night before a workday.

Still, families made their way to the beach — many walking from nearby neighborhoods, riding bikes and rolling along on scooters.

“We are not going to be stuck in traffic,” said Sylvie Fortin, of Fairfield, who came with the whole family on bicycles.

Like others, she said it was nice to be returning to communal activities.

“After COVID, we can feel the excitement and celebration, and it’s good to share it,” she said.

Some were there for their very first fireworks experience, including Scarlett Reed, of Southport, who just turned 1 year old last week.

“It’s a big family tradition,” said her father, Nick Reed. “We’ve come here every year, practically my whole life."

Reed said he was sorry to see the event canceled last year.

“It was a huge disappointment,” he said. “We’re just excited to be back and be out with our family.”
