FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield man is charged after he abandoned his vehicle in the Mill River while intoxicated, according to police.

Kevin Kane, 61, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and evading responsibility after officers found his unoccupied vehicle in the river, police said.

About 10 p.m. Thursday, the vehicle crashed through a split rail fence at Sturges and Unquowa roads, traveled about 100 yards across a sloping grass field and came to rest partially submerged in the river, about 25 feet from shore, according to police. Kane left the scene and was found just minutes after the crash near the parking lot of The Carolton on Mill Plain Road, police said, noting Kane failed field sobriety tests.
