Want To Buy A Lighthouse? There's One For Sale Near Fairfield

Penfield Reef Lighthouse will be up for auction starting later this month.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Looking for a property with waterfront views? Well, there’s nothing but waterfront at Penfield Reef Lighthouse, which is being put up for auction by the federal government.

The lighthouse is located off the coast of Fairfield, where it marks a submerged reef. Bidding is set to start at $100,000, according to documents from the U.S. General Services Administration. The online auction will begin noon Monday.

The property includes a 51-foot octagonal light structure above a two-story keeper’s cottage. The lighthouse was completed in 1874 in the Second Empire Style, and was listed in 1990 on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2015, the exterior of the lighthouse was restored to its 19th century appearance, with renovations such as a new roof and hurricane-resistant windows. The property also includes a pier and boat landing.

The lighthouse is a Federal Aid to Navigation, and has two lighting systems.
