Coal City Man Finally Surrenders To Police

The Coal City Police Department asked people to stay away from the area of Elm Street and Broadway as Monday afternoon's standoff continued.

COAL CITY, IL — A 46-year-old resident of Coal City is now in custody after surrendering to authorities following a three-hour standoff. WSCJ in Morris identified the criminal suspect as James Hammen.

He gave himself up to authorities around 5:20 p.m.

Earlier, the Coal City Police Department urged people to stay away from a house along East Elm Street because a man facing criminal charges was refusing to surrender to police and throwing weapons from the house.

The man was hiding inside a house at 55 E. East St. Monday's incident involving police was going on for about three hours.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Coal City police posted on Facebook that the man was throwing sharp knives out of the house on Elm Street. Police said they were trying to arrest the man on charges of domestic battery, aggravated assault, violation of a protection order, criminal damage to property and obstructing a police officer.
