Copper Leaf Channahon – 10,000 Years in The Making

Copper Leaf is Roaring With Life

Channahon, IL – If you’ve driven down US Route 6 between Tryon Street and McKinley Woods Road, you may have noticed that Copper Leaf, a development that has been in the works since 2005 is bustling with activity.

As you drive down Copper Leaf Drive, you can’t help but notice the five homes that are currently under construction. Indeed, Copper Leaf has come roaring back to life – and at a moment when remaining new home lots in Channahon are dwindling.

According to Mike Petrick, Director of Community Development with The Village of Channahon, at the current pace of building, Channahon will be out of lots by mid-2021 unless another development comes online.

To say that Copper Leaf is a development unlike any other would be an absolute understatement. Each of the home-sites are unique, featuring home sites from a 1/2 acre up to 1.5 acres. Some of the home-sites sit on top of the DuPage River, while others are nestled deep in the woods. According to The Channahon Park District, the origins of this area date back over 10,000 years. Thick snow and ice formed what are known as Pleistocene glaciers that covered over 85% of what is now Illinois. The sheer weight of these glaciers caused them to ‘flow’ across the area. This movement over time both flattened and scored the land leaving deep cuts and the unique terrain that we see in the area today. Other areas received mineral deposits and mounded areas. As these glaciers began to melt, the lakes and rivers we know today were formed.

However, having a home with a unique home site is one thing – having a home within walking distance to the areas distinctive attractions is another. Across from Copper Leaf is the Channahon Park District’s Arroyo Trails, a privately funded trail and outdoor nature learning experience. Residents of Copper Leaf can quite literally walk across the street, reconnect with nature while taking in the amazing sites of this unique area. Additional funds have been raised and phase II of Arroyo Trails commences this spring.

In the back of Copper Leaf is the future connection trail to The Four Rivers Environmental Center and Channahon State Park, with a new walking path coming down Old Route 6. Construction on the trail is proposed to commence this year. According to The Will County Forrest Preserve, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center is a model of green architecture, featuring a re-purposed building site and interior fireplace, geothermal heating and cooling system, recycled and sustainable building materials, and energy saving technology.

In addition, residents of Copper Leaf can partake in the following activities at Four Rivers, just outside of their doorstep:

  1. Biking
  2. Hiking/Running
  3. In-Line Skating
  4. Cross-Country Skiing
  5. Snowshoeing
  6. Picnicking
  7. Fishing
  8. Canoeing/Kayaking
  9. Geocaching

The Village of Channahon’s slogan may be “Where the Waters Meet” but perhaps Copper Leaf’s new slogan should be “Where Nature Lovers Meet”.
