MINOOKA, IL — Marsha Williams announced on Wednesday that she is running as the Democratic candidate for the 16th Congressional district of Illinois in the 2022 election in the hopes of defeating Republican incumbent Adam Kinzinger.

Williams said she has served as the Minooka Alumni Association Board chairwoman and was a founding member of the Minooka Alumni Football game to help raise funds to update the stadium. As along-time District 16 resident, she is a mother of two children.

"This is refreshing news for many District 16 residents as they continue to feel unheard by the Congressmen and women to represent them," Williams said in her news release announcing her candidacy.

Since then, Kinzinger has made national headlines as the most vocal Republican critic of now-former President Donald Trump.

Kinzinger supported efforts to impeach Trump.

"Adam Kinzinger has been absent from his district since he was elected," Williams informed Patch. "He rarely, if ever, holds town halls where the citizens of Illinois District 16 can ask him questions. It has gotten so far where he has blocked constituents from commenting on his social media platforms. His voting record shows to me ... that he doesn't care about us and uplifting our communities to a better future.

"He has voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act that addresses the gender pay gap. He voted no on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. He voted against bills that would have addressed our rising Maternal and Fetal mortality in our country, among many other bills that would have benefited our communities. Lastly, he received over a million dollars last year in Corporate PAC money which is concerning to me as I am for ending Citizens United so we can go back to our legislators representing the people, not corporations."
