Young Lady Eagles Hope to Continue Improvement

Eagles hope to keep improving.

The Families of Faith Christian Academy Lady Eagles are entering just their fourth season of existence. While they have yet to post their first winning season, they have shown marked improvement under head coach Mike Blan.

The Eagles finished 13-14 last season, just missing a .500 record and only lost two players. Gone are Sarah Ayers and Alli Willis, but everyone else is back, including their playmaking point guard, Destiny Villalejo.

New additions that the Eagles hope to see develop rapidly this year include Freshman Kira Stonebraker and Bella Frazier. They are joined by Freshman Gabi Mauro who just missed being named all-conference as an eighth grader last year.

“Bella could be a special post player”, said FOFCA AD Kenton Ayers. ”The coaches really like what she is capable of doing this year”, added Ayers. “Stonebraker is a new addition to the school, so we’re learning about her abilities everyday”, said Ayers. “She’s a promising player we think”.

These two will be joining Villalejo who can do it all when she’s healthy and really on her game. “She can score, rebound, handle the ball, really do everything that needs to be done”, said Ayers. “She’s an exciting player to watch”.

The Eagle coaches are also excited about Gabi Mauro who took major steps forward last year and missed being an all-conference selection by one vote. “We have a saying here”, Ayers said, “smart student, smart player and she is one smart student”. Add in her work ethic and Mauro soon becomes a player who could really break out this year for the Eagles.

The Lady Eagles also are hoping Natalie Robertson finds her shooting form from two years ago. If she does, the Eagles will have that outside scoring punch to go along with what they hope is a developing inside threat in Frazier. That could add up to a few more wins this year.

And the Lady Eagles will be debuting new uniforms this year, as will the boys. It’s shaping up to be an exciting season of basketball at FOFCA.

The Eagles open their 2014-15 campaign in tough fashion against Schaumburg Christian on November 14.
