2 Girls, 13 and 14 Years Old, Shot in Chicago Monday Night

The children had "no known gang affiliation" but their dad does.

CHICAGO, IL — On the day after Christmas, two girls riding in a van with their dad were shot on Chicago's South Side when someone opened fire on the van. One of the girls, 14, was critically wounded when she took a bullet in the back Monday night.

The child is at Comer Children's Hospital. The other girl, 13, suffered a graze wound to her arm. She was in good condition at St. Bernard Hospital. A 2-year-old boy inside the van was not hit during the flurry of gunshots.

Their dad, a 28-year-old a documented gang member, had just left the vehicle to go inside a home in the 7500 block of South Union in the Gresham community when two men walked up to the van and began shooting around 11:30 p.m. near Leland Giants Park, according to Chicago Police.

Police felt compelled to note the children had "no known gang affiliation" and it wasn't known if they were the targets.

Throughout the Christmas weekend, the season of goodwill and giving did not dissuade some from shooting and killing — 61 people were shot in Chicago, 11 of whom died — to close out a year of record-setting gunfire and fatalities. More than 4,300 people have been shot so far, about 770 of them fatally, and we still have five more days before the new year begins.
