Chicago Cop Shot By Gunman, 2nd Officer Fires, Injuring Shooter: Police

An 18-year-old was also shot by the gunman who struck the officer, police said.

CHICAGO ? One Chicago police officer was shot and another officer struck the gunman while both officers were responding to a fight over the weekend on Chicago?s far south side, according to authorities.

The uniformed officers responded shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday to a report of a disturbance in the 11400 block of South Davol Street, where they arrived to find a group, including a 35-year-old and an 18-year-old involved in an altercation, police said.

As the officers tried to separate the men, the 35-year-old?s gun went off, hitting the teen and one of the officers, who was struck in the chest and was wearing a protective vest, according to police.

The second officer returned fire, striking the man and, inadvertently, the teen, police said. Both were taken to hospitals in fair condition, according to police, who said the officer who was shot was brought to a hospital and later discharged.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident and both officers will be put on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days, police said.
