4th Chicago Cop Commits Suicide Since July
The 43-year-old detective was found dead Sunday in his Southwest Side home.

CHICAGO — A 43-year-old Chicago police detective was found dead Sunday after killing himself in his Southwest Side home, according to the Chicago Tribune. The death marks the fourth member of the city's police force to committ suicide since July.
The detective, who was off-duty at the time, was found at about 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in his Garfield Ridge home in the 5700 block of South Nottingham Avenue, the report stated. Details about the cause of death were not given.
In September, two Chicago police officers committed suicide a little more than a week apart. An on-duty sergeant died in his squad car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sept. 3 in the 0-100 block of North Des Plaines Street. A 54-year-old officer who was off-duty at the time was found dead Sept. 12 in her personal vehicle, which was parked in the 5th District police station lot, 727 E. 111th St.

That station also was where a 37-year-old police officer shot and killed himself in his squad car in July. Ofc. Brandon Krueger had been on-duty at the time.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the suicide rate for Chicago police officers is more than 60 percent higher than national average for members of law enforcement. Chicago cops also are more likely to take their own lives than to die in the line of duty, the agency said.
