Chicago Bakery Loses 800 Workers, $21M After Immigration Raid

A Swiss company that makes hamburger buns for McDonald's said it's struggling to run its business.

CHICAGO, IL — A bakery on the city's West Side said it's struggling to restaff after it lost 800 workers in an immigration raid. About a third of the workers at Cloverhill Bakery lost jobs. The bakery, which is in the city's Galewood neighborhood, is run by Zurich-based Aryzta AG.

The company said the raid led to a 7 percent decline in sales from North America over three months—a loss of about $21.6 million. The company makes baked goods for supermarkets and fast-food chains in its Galewood bakery, and also has a warehouse in Cicero.

Aryzta AG said the employees were supplied by a job-placement agency that faced federal audits earlier this year. The company said it wasn't aware of how risky the hires were to the business. Aryzta AG declined to name the staffing company.
