Chicago Bungalow Awards: Nominations Sought For Best Projects
The Chicago Bungalow Association is holding their annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow awards.

CHICAGO — Nominations are sought for the 15th annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow awards. Created by the Chicago Bungalow Association with the support of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the awards honor the creativity and efforts of bungalow owners for home improvement and restoration projects both large and small, according to a news release from the Chicago Bungalow Association.
Awards are given in the following categories:
- Exterior Rehabilitation: Demonstrates appropriate rehabilitation projects and/or compatible new additions
- Interior Rehabilitation: Demonstrates a contemporary use of space while maintaining significant features
- Interior Restoration: Accurately recovers the details and forms of the Chicago bungalow
- Small Project: Preserves historic detail and form while improving one aspect of a room or the exterior at a cost of $5,000 or less
- Green Project: Demonstrates the use of energy-efficient design and renovation while maintaining classic features—can be a rain garden or landscape project if it incorporates green elements such as native plants, permeable pavers, etc.
- Landscape Design: Demonstrates a creative design solution and enhances the bungalow’s overall visual impression
- Window Restoration: Preserves historic detail and materials of original wood windows using appropriate methods for repair/restoration
"Over the past fifteen years of the Driehaus Awards, Chicago bungalow owners have shown the pride they take in caring for their homes, whether they’ve owned their home for two years or twenty,” Mary Ellen Guest, executive director of the Chicago Bungalow Association, said. “More and more nominations come in every year from bungalow owners in neighborhoods throughout the city.”

The first place winner in each category will be awarded $1,000 and a handcrafted bronze plaque. Now for the second year, the honorable mention in each category will be awarded $250 and a handcrafted bronze plaque.

Nominations must be of CBA-certified brick Chicago-style bungalows located in the City of Chicago. Nominations can be made by bungalow owners themselves, a neighbor, friend, or neighborhood association. Nominated projects can be whole homes, single rooms, or small projects and will be judged by a panel of architects, preservation experts, and civic leaders. Any project completed within the last five years is eligible. All nominations are due by Tuesday, Oct. 29 and on-site viewing of the finalists’ bungalows will be conducted on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9.
How To Enter
The awards nomination form can be submitted online here or mailed to CBA at 53 W Jackson Blvd, Suite 740, Chicago, IL 60604. Submissions must include before and after photographs of the project.
