The Chicago Police Department released gun violence numbers covering the deadly 4th of July holiday weekend from July 2 through July 5.
CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department released gun violence numbers covering the deadly 4th of July holiday weekend. From July 2 through July 5, 100 people were shot and 18 killed by gun violence. Among the casualties were 11 children and two Chicago police officers.
During the same 72-hour period that began last Friday, 189 people were killed and 516 injured in 540 shootings across the country, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Chicago is on track to exceed last year’s totals of people shot and/or killed by gun violence. Half-way through 2021, two more people have been shot in Chicago compared to this time last year, as of July 5.

Since the July 4th holiday stats have been posted, 36 people have been shot, including two ATF agents and a Chicago police officer. Five people were slain by gunfire.
