Chicago Police Officer Shot While Driving Home After Overnight Shift
The officer suffered a graze wound and managed to return fire early Sunday, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago Police officer was shot and wounded as he drove home after his overnight shift early Sunday morning. The officer suffered a graze wound to his arm but he returned fire.
Police are investigating whether the officer was targeted or if this was a case of mistaken identity.
He was driving in Bridgeport when a brown minivan sped up on 31st Street toward the officer's car. Police said the officer slowed to let the minivan pass when the someone opened fire on him, striking his front windshield several times.

The shooting took place around 5 a.m. near the intersection of 31st and South Loomis Street. The officer was wounded in his upper arm. Detectives are reviewing security-camera footage from the area.
The officer was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and released, according to a Chicago Police statement.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson spoke about the shooting Sunday night.
"Incidents like this clearly show that there are individuals out there who don't fear the consequences and are willing to use a gun on another human being," Johnson said.
