Detour: Wednesday Ramp Closure Will Reroute Lake Shore Drive Traffic
The closure of a Chicago ramp that carries traffic from Lake Shore Drive could make for a messy commute this week.

CHICAGO – An overnight closure of a ramp that carries traffic from Lake Shore Drive could make for a messy commute for early risers this week.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday a Wednesday closure for the outbound Stevenson Expressway — southbound Interstate 55. Weather permitting, the shutdown will make way for, a, "necessary stage change" for the city's ongoing Interchange Reconstruction Project that comprises I-55 and Lake Shore Drive.
Starting at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, the ramp that carries traffic from southbound Lake Shore Drive to the outbound Stevenson Expressway will be closed to traffic. Crews are expected to be on site until at least 5 a.m. A posted detour will direct southbound Lake Shore Drive drivers to exit at 31st Street. They will be permitted to re-enter northbound Lake Shore Drive and take the ramp to the outbound Stevenson.

"In the new traffic pattern, motorists will use the newly constructed ramps to travel from Lake Shore Drive to the southbound Stevenson Expressway," IDOT representatives said. "Motorists traveling on northbound Lake Shore Drive to the outbound Stevenson ramp will not be able to access the State Street exit."
Among other things, the Interchange Reconstruction Project includes adding six new bridge structures, six retaining walls, installing curbs and gutters, modifying drainage structures, and relocating light poles and signs. Work also includes upgrades and additions to surveillance equipment.

Drivers should expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. They are also urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey posted speed limits, and be mindful of workers and equipment.
