Hadassah CNS Shore Past President Nissah Mattenson Saluted for 60 Years of Service
(May 23, 2018 - Chicago, IL) – Hadassah Chicago-North Shore’s (CNS) Power Hour on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 PM and Power Lunch on Thursday, May 31 at 11:30 AM will feature award-winning writer Francine Klagsbrun, author of “Lioness: Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel,” winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book of the Year Award, announced Hadassah CNS President Greta Rothschild. The May 31 luncheon will also honor Hadassah CNS Past President Nissah Mattenson (1992-1995) for sixty years of service to the organization throughout which she has served in a variety of leadership and board positions, including Major Gifts Chair. Lisa Hostein, editor of the award-winning Hadassah Magazine will serve as MC for both events which will feature a Q&A with Ms. Klagsbrun.

The 2018 Power Hour on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 PM will be held at Moadon Kol Chadash, 2464 N. Clybourn Avenue, Chicago, IL 60614. The 2018 Power Lunch on Thursday, May 31 at 11:30 AM will be held at Congregation Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062. “Lioness” has been acclaimed as the definitive biography of the iron-willed leader, chain-smoking political operative, and tea-and-cake-serving grandmother who became the fourth prime minister of Israel. It has been cited for its superb research and is the winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book of the Year Award and the Everett Family Foundation Book of the Year. Francine Klagsbrun is the author of more than a dozen books, including “The Fourth Commandment: Remember the Sabbath Day” and “Married People: Staying Together in the Age of Divorce.” Klagsbrun was also the editor of the best-selling “Free to Be…You and Me” and is a regular columnist for The Jewish Week, a contributing editor to Lilith and on the editorial board of Hadassah Magazine. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Newsweek and Ms. Magazine.

Nissah Mattenson has been a member of Hadassah for sixty years. A native of Birmingham, Alabama and a graduate of Northwestern University, she chose to remain in Chicago after college, working for a management consulting firm. She married Merle Mattenson in 1957 and is the proud mother of 5 children and 13 grandchildren. After moving to Highland Park, she became a member of Hadassah Highland Park, where she served as president and held many other board and chair positions. Nissah also held many positions on the North Shore board, including Major Gifts Chair. She was elected President of Hadassah North Shore and served for three years, 1992-1995. Nissah has also served on the board of Hadassah Great Plains and as an advisor to several chapters. Nissah’s parents were passionate Zionists and very active in the community. They instilled the love of Israel and Judaism in their children. Having visited Israel many times and seen the work of Hadassah first hand, she continues to share her passion for the goals and philosophy of Hadassah.
