Hostage Situation Resolved in Maximum-Security Tier at Cook County Jail | Updated

CHICAGO, IL — Two Cook County jail inmates held another inmate hostage as they took control of a housing tier in the maximum security division, according to the sheriff's office.

The incident began late Thursday around 4:30, and was resolved before 8 p.m.

The detainees "covered the floor with a soapy water and obscured the fixed cameras within the tier, only to eventually rip the cameras down entirely," reads a statement from the sheriff's office issued just before 7 p.m. "There are 16 other detainees in the tier, one of whom (was) being held hostage by the two aggressors with what appears to be a sharp object."

The Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team responded to the situation.

No corrections officers or prisoners were injured, according to the sheriff's office. The unit contains 48 prisoners.

A large number of police officers were deployed near the jail.

One of the inmates involved is being held on a murder charge. The other is being held on a batter to a police officer charge.

Charges will be filed in connection with the hostage taking.
