How Does Illinois' Economy Perform Nationally?
Comparing Illinois' overall economic performance to our neighboring states.

Despite having the nation’s fifth-highest GDP and an economic powerhouse in Chicago, there isn’t too much to brag about these days when it comes to Illinois’ economy.
A recent analysis by Governing Magazine ranked each state based on its economic performance using six indicators from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Bureau of Economic Analysis:
- Current state unemployment rate
- Improvement in the state unemployment rate over the past year
- Per capita state GDP in 2015
- Percent change in real state GDP between 2014 and 2015
- Percent change in state personal income per capita from the third quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016
- Percentage growth in year-to-date increases in jobs for 2016
After ranking states with the strongest and weakest overall economic performance, Governing then looked at a survey of gubernatorial approval ratings.
