Macy’s Closings to Include Illinois Stores

Retailer said it's closing locations to re-invest in e-commerce and a better in-store experience.

Three of the 24 Illinois Macy’s stores will close this year, the retailer announced on Wednesday.

The chain said it will shutter a total of 68 locations by the end of 2017 to save money, re-invest in e-commerce and provide better customer service at remaining stores.

Illinois will lose stores in Alton, Bloomingdale and Bloomington, it said. The three stores employ a total of 196 associates. The Alton Square location opened in 1978, the Stratford Square store in Bloomingdale opened in 1981 and the Eastland Mall location in Bloomington has been open since 1999.

The locations will begin clearance sales on Jan. 9 before closing in around eight to 12 weeks, according to Macy's.

Three of the 68 stores are already closed, final clearance sales will soon begin or have begun at six stores, and the rest will close by the end of the year, according to a company press release. These stores are part of the 100 closings it announced in August. When that announcement was made, the specific stores set to close were not named.
