New Book Offers Advice on Advocating for Children
"Bettering the World One Child at a Time" Provides Insights for Families from Form Cook County Family Courts Judge

During Child Abuse Awareness month in April and Foster Care Awareness Month in May, children and their safety is top of mind. Retired Judge Michael Ian Bender, has published a book with Eckhartz Press to share insights and lessons that can benefit families and those working with families during a divorce or domestic situation. The book, "Protecting Children: Bettering the World One Child at a Time" is about advocating for children.
"During my time as a Judge in the family courts of Cook County, and my subsequent years as a child's advocate, I have seen so many heartbreaking cases of child abuse and neglect," said Judge Michael Ian Bender. "This book is my way of sharing what I have learned about child psychology and legal care during my professional journey. It is my great hope that readers will gain insights on what can be done to protect a child during negative family situations," he added.
The statistics of child abuse are alarming. Recent studies suggest that five children die every day from abuse, and more than 70 percent of these children are under the age of three. Both boys and girls are susceptible to abuse, as 90 percent of abusers know the survivor in some way.

"It is essential that the adults in the lives of these children do everything that they can to protect them. These grownups include not only parents and relatives, but also legal system participants," stated Bender.
