The Top 10 Military Ghost Stories in Illinois

While Illinois is not regarded for its military history like some other states, it did play an instrumental role during the American Civil War.

Not only was Illinois a major provider of clothing, food and military supplies for the Union Army because of its close proximity to major railroads and rivers, but also soldiers.

Some 256,000 Illinoisans fought for the Union Army -- more than any northern state except for New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. But loyalties were divided in southern Illinois during the war, leading some men to fight for the Confederacy and even prompting calls for secession.

Illinois also was home to some of the largest prisoner-of-war camps for Confederate troops, where thousands died while in captivity and buried in nearby cemeteries. That's why many of the state's most well-known military ghost legends originate from southern Illinois.
