Watch Funeral For Chicago Cop Killed In Hospital Shooting

Mourners trudged through 7 inches of snow Monday morning to attend the funeral for slain Ofc. Samuel Jimenez.

DES PLAINES, IL — Family, friends and law enforcement colleagues turned out in blizzard conditions Monday morning for the funeral of slain Chicago police Ofc. Samuel Jimenez. The 28-year-old father of three was one of three people killed when a gunman opened fire last week at Mercy Hospital and Treatment Center.

About 7 inches of snow fell outside the Chapel of St. Joseph at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where the funeral for Jimenez was to be held. Snow plows and shovels were used to help clear parking lots and sidewalks as mourners began to file in, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Cardinal Blase Cupich of the Archdiocese of Chicago was the celebrant for the Mass. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Gov. Bruce Rauner and Chicago police Supt. Eddie Johnson all attended and spoke at the funeral.

Jimenez was one of the newest officers with the Chicago Police Department. He joined the force in 2017 and had only recently finished his probationary period with the department in August. A graduate of Chicago's Foreman High School and Northeastern Illinois University, Jimenez and his wife were set to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary in December.

The officer was fatally shot in the neck Nov. 22 during a shooting spree by Juan Lopez, 32, at the Near South Side hospital. The incident had started as a domestic fight between Lopez and his former fiancée, Dr. Tamara O'Neal, who worked at Mercy.

Lopez fatally shot O'Neal in an outside parking lot. He then entered the hospital, where he shot Jimenez and Dayna Less, a 24-year-old, first-year pharmacy resident at the medical center.

Jimenez is the second Chicago police officer to have been killed in the line of duty this year. That total is largest the department has seen since five officers were slain in 2010. On Feb. 13, Cmdr. Paul Bauer, 53, was shot multiple times outside the Thompson Center while trying to help tactical officers apprehend a 44-year-old career criminal wanting for questioning, according to authorities.

On Sunday, thousands turned out a Des Plaines funeral home for visitation for Jimenez.
