134 Joliet City Employees Topped $170,000 In Pay Last Year
Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans was the 38th highest paid Joliet employee in 2024 while Joliet Fire Chief Jeff Carey was the 34th highest.

JOLIET ? This week, Joliet Patch learned that Joliet's annual public compensation report for calendar year 2024 has now been posted on the city of Joliet's website.
In an effort to provide the taxpayers with greater transparency and open government in terms of how their tax dollars are being spent, Joliet Patch is publishing the following public compensation data. A total of 134 employees made more than $170,000 last year during Mayor Terry D'Arcy's first full year as mayor and Beth Beatty's first year on the job as city manager.
Another 104 city of Joliet employees made between $150,000 and $169,999, the compensation report showed.

In other words, at least 238 of Joliet's employees topped $150,000 in compensation for 2024, an increase of 117 employees during the span of three calendar years. In a story Joliet Patch published three years ago, Patch reported that 121 city of Joliet employees made at least $150,000.
The 2024 compensation data posted on Joliet's website only lists the total amount of compensation for the city employees. The data does not include their base salary and other pay components such as overtime pay. A small number of these employees who made the list retired or left the city of Joliet. For them, their total compensation may have included sizeable payouts for their unused vacation, sick banks and comp time accruals.

The city of Joliet website listed the highest paid city of Joliet official for 2024 as James T. Ryan Jr. the downtown Station 1 battalion chief. However, the city's payroll data information is not correct, Ryan notified Joliet Patch.
According to Ryan, the city finance department made an error and incorrectly combined his compensation with the compensation for his son, who is also a member of the Joliet Fire Department. The younger Ryan is an apparatus operator and paramedic. Both Ryans have the same name, the battalion chief explained.
Ryan said he has notified the city about the payroll error. He told Patch he made approximately $216,000 last year, not the roughly $354,000 that Joliet has published on the city's website.

Employee compensation typically entails approximately 67 percent of Joliet's overall operating budget. Because Joliet employee pay continues to climb, City Hall staff either has to raise taxes to generate more income to pay the employees or cut back on other projects, such as neighborhood street and sidewalk repairs and upkeep on neighborhood parks.
The following compensation data for Joliet employees making $170,000 or higher spans calendar year for 2024. Keep in mind that for some of the employees listed below, their job titles may have changed.
