JOLIET, IL ? Corey Jacobs, the 26-year-old Joliet man who authorities say caused last Thursday's daytime wreck on West Jefferson Street that sent several people to St. Joe's hospital, will remain in the Will County Jail indefinitely under the SAFE-T-Act, Will County's weekend rotating Judge Zachary Pollack has ruled.

Jacobs is charged with armed violence, two crimes of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer. After hearing the prosecution's case, Judge Pollack decided that Jacobs met the willful flight standard and the dangerousness standard of the SAFE-T-Act to warrant his detention.

According to the prosecution's filing, Will County Sheriff's undercover police met with Jacobs at the West Jefferson Street McDonald's restaurant in Joliet to buy cocaine. The undercover officer gave Jacobs $160 as he was seated in the driver's seat of his ex-girlfriend's Chevy sedan, and she was in the passenger's seat. Officers then tried to pin the Chevy in and arrest Jacobs, but he drove over the curb and fled Jefferson Street, prosecutors allege.

Jacobs and his ex-girlfriend were trapped inside their vehicle and the Joliet Fire Department had to cut them out as well as put out the fire to the car, court files show. He and his ex-girlfriend were also taken to the hospital, according to prosecutors.

"Sue stated that the items recovered in the vehicle were not hers and brought by him," prosecutors pointed out. "The people pray that this honorable court deny the defendant pretrial release."
