Coronavirus Cases At Joliet Nursing Homes Top 150

Over 150 people at Joliet nursing homes have been infected with the coronavirus and dozens have died, according to state data.

JOLIET, IL — A total of 152 people at Joliet's extended stay facilities and nursings have been infected with the new coronavirus, according to data from the Illinois Department of Health. Of those, 32 have died.

The most cases, by far, are at Symphony of Joliet, which a WGN-TV report says has seen 26 deaths — 24 residents and two employees — of its 81 cases reported by the state.

The latest coronavirus death at Symphony was a 57-year-old employee.

Symphony may be subject to some extra scrutiny. Joliet Mayor Bob O'Dekirk has asked Gov. J.B. Pritzker's staff on Friday to conduct a full investigation into "the mess that happened at the Symphony of Joliet nursing home."

"Joliet families and people who lost a loved one have a right to get those answers," O'Dekirk said. "We don't have answers right now but we are going to get the answers."

The state is assisting Symphony, according to the WGN report.

The state health department said that as of Sunday, 21 people have died at Symphony. It's not immediately clear why the state's reported numbers are lower than media reports.
